Recent rule discussions and the quiet renaissance of skilled big men suggest the pendulum, having swung hard toward efficiency, is finding a richer equilibrium where the optimal and the beautiful renegotiate their terms.

With optical tracking now capturing every player's position twenty-five times per second, the next frontier is defence — long the dark side of the analytical moon. Metrics for contest quality, help positioning, and screen navigation are maturing rapidly, and early results suggest defensive value has been systematically underpriced for decades.

Basketball's analytics revolution succeeded because it answered questions coaches were already asking, with evidence they could not ignore. The game that emerged is faster, more skilled, and more spatially intelligent than anything that preceded it. Whether it is better is a question mathematics cannot answer — which may be the healthiest thing about it.
